Video: Copic Tip to Tip and Palette Blending

 Tip To Tip Blending

This technique really demonstrates one of the unique properties of copic ink. Tip to top blending is good for long, very skinny areas like flower stems, where you wouldn’t have enough room to get a blend using one of the other techniques. This works for any color combination, through its easiest to learn with a light color and a dark color.

1. Use your light color as your brush; carefully add a bit of the dark color to the top. This is the trickiest part of this technique as it is hard to figure out if you have applied too much or too little ink.

2. Start from the dark side of your object, and in one long stroke pulls your brush across the shape. Your dark color should gradually fade into your light color. If you need to darken or add more color, apply it in the same way, in the same direction. You can see that this technique will not contaminate the top of the other marker. If you are working with the colorless blender you can also pull ink directly from the dirty barrel of the colored marker.

Palette Blending

This is similar to top to top blending; however, it is easier to see how much ink you’re picking up with this technique. You can keep your little color palette and use any residue in the future as well, or mix a tiny “batch” of special color blend. This is a very old traditional marker rendering technique. Again, use two markers one lighter than the other to start.

1. Take a few dark colors and make small dabs on your plastic palette. Try to lay down a generous amount of ink because the ink will be used quickly.

2. With the lighter color, pick up a spot of dark from the plastic and color onto your image. This is great for small spots of blending colors that would be tricky to achieve a smooth feather on, or are too small for blending on the paper without making a blog. If you want a color to blend to white, use the blender.

3. Scribble off the darker color onto some scratch paper to keep your light marker tips nice and clean.

As you get more practice using Copic markers you will develop a method of coloring that is all your own. The techniques listed are basic, and good for very specific images. You may find yourself using two or three techniques listed here on a single image. Another person may color the same picture using only one technique.

Other common techniques:

· Starting with a dark color and adding a light color, instead of going light dark light
· Blending using only the lightest and darkest color in each blending group.
